Question 1

How do I become a certified chess coach in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

To become a certified chess coach in South Africa, you must complete the Training the Trainers (TTT) seminar — a 3-day in-person programme run by Chess SA. Your certification level (School Supervisor, Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3) is determined by your written assessment score. You can also complete preparatory online courses (School Supervisor Course, Online Chess Coach Course) to improve your chances.

Question 2

What is the Training the Trainers (TTT) seminar?

Accepted Answer

The TTT (Training the Trainers) seminar is the only official gateway to chess coaching certification in South Africa. It is a structured 3-day in-person (or hybrid) programme costing R1,650. Participants receive a full training manual and complete a written assessment. Their certification level is determined by their score: 30% = School Supervisor, 50% = Entry Level, 70% = Level 1, 80% = Level 2, 90% = Level 3.

Question 3

What is the difference between Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 coaching?

Accepted Answer

The CHESSA certification hierarchy is: School Supervisor (introductory oversight role), Entry Level (foundation coaching), Level 1 (structured programme delivery), Level 2 (advanced programme design), and Level 3 (elite coaching capability). Each level requires a higher score in the TTT assessment. FIDE Instructor status is the highest international tier and requires separate FIDE qualification.

Question 4

How do I find a chess coach in my province?

Accepted Answer

Use the Chess SA Coach Directory at southafricanchesscoaches.co.za/directory. You can filter by all 9 South African provinces, by certification level (Entry Level through FIDE), and by coaching status (Active, Pending, Expired). Coaches who have consented to public listing will show their contact details directly in their profile.

Question 5

Is CHESSA coaching certification recognised by FIDE and SASCOC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Chess SA coaching certification programme is officially recognised by both FIDE (the International Chess Federation) and SASCOC (the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee). The TTT programme and its certification levels are aligned with the international FIDE coach development framework.

Question 6

How much does chess coach certification cost in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

The TTT 3-day certification seminar costs R1,650 and includes the full training manual. Online preparatory courses range from R300 (Parent Survival Guide) to R500 (School Supervisor Course, Online Chess Coach Course, School Implementation Guide). The School Starter Pack bundles three courses for R900, saving R600 vs individual purchase.

Question 7

Can I do the chess coaching course online?

Accepted Answer

The online courses (Parent Survival Guide, School Supervisor Course, Online Chess Coach Course, School Implementation Guide) are fully online and on-demand. The core TTT certification seminar is an in-person or hybrid 3-day programme — it cannot be completed entirely online as it includes a supervised written assessment.

Question 8

What is a school chess supervisor?

Accepted Answer

A school chess supervisor is a teacher or school staff member who has been trained to oversee chess activities at their school. They qualify at the 30% threshold in the TTT assessment, or by completing the dedicated School Supervisor Course (R500 online). They are not full coaches but are qualified to manage school-level chess programmes.

Question 9

How do I enrol my school in a chess programme?

Accepted Answer

Schools can start by purchasing the School Starter Pack (R900), which includes the Parent Survival Guide, School Implementation Guide, and School Supervisor Course. For bulk learner licensing, packages start at R2,500 for 50 learners (R50/learner). Contact headcoach@chessa.co.za to discuss your school's specific needs.

Question 10

How long is the CHESSA coaching certification valid?

Accepted Answer

Please contact Chess SA directly at headcoach@chessa.co.za for the latest information on certification renewal and validity periods, as these may be updated from time to time in line with FIDE and SASCOC requirements.

Question 11

How do I register for the national coaches registry?

Accepted Answer

Complete the online registration form at southafricanchesscoaches.co.za/register. You will need your CHESSA ID, province, certification level, coaching experience, and contact details. Once submitted, your application is reviewed by Chess SA. You can also opt in to have your contact details publicly listed in the coach directory.

Question 12

What are the player development certificates (Pawn to Super King)?

Accepted Answer

Chess SA offers a 7-level player development pathway for learners: Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook (Foundation — R50 each), and Queen, King, Super King (Advanced — R100 each). Each certificate recognises a progressively higher level of chess skill and understanding, giving learners a structured progression pathway.
