Learnt new chess tricks as well as what it takes to be a great coach

I learnt that being a coach isn’t just about encouraging your learners to win and collect medals. But it can also be an educational platform where you can address the issues of inclusivity and diversity. I also learnt that being a coach also means taking care of the well being of your athletes both emotionally and physically. In term of chess, (playing chess) I learnt the 2 now trick, I knew the trick already but I did not know the term used for them namely; fork and lucena position.

Went in front and demonstratedthe fork trick using a knight. I also got exposed to more digital platforms that can be used to improve chess skills for myself and athletes.

Learnt special moves and new tricks

Todaw was wonderful and overwhelming at the same time. Even though I could play chess prior, but I never knew there were such amazing tricks such as fork, skewer and pin. I got and understanding of those concepts and then was taught a new trick that chess is the game of trade you have to be willing to trade a piece for a move. However, ensure that the trade is appropriate. Today I also learnt the value of the pieces wrote Two test and got gold medals on both although the knight test proved to be a bit challenging than pawn test.

Demonstrating Techniques and Understanding Chess Terminology

The importance of showing players what you are teaching them, rather than just explaining how to execute a move, is crucial. For instance, instead of simply telling them to 'make a little house around a king,' it is essential to demonstrate the concept visually. Additionally, it is vital to know the definitions of the terms you are using.

I learned that being a chess coach entails more than just chess theory. It focuses more on becoming a better person and knowing how to interact with your students and their parents and how to read and change their tone. Working with kids but even adults I really could identify the tones on which certain individuals operate. This won't only help me in working with the kids but also know how to regulate myself and the other person. Especially when communicating as we learned the correct way of communication and how the process should start and end. The tone scales is live changing and I can see how I can implement it in coaching, work, social and make a difference without stressing about how to handle a difficult person/child.

Mistakes should be welcomed

Coach was mentioning how Chess players aren’t always given enough opportunities to make mistakes (e.g., illegal moves). I’ve learned that this is a concept we should not encourage and that mistakes should be welcomed especially during club practices. Emotion regulation should be taught and that chess develops the child holistically.

Making Chess Relatable

Coach taught us how we could use storytelling to simplify chess and add another dimension of gamification to teaching chess. Storytelling also allows learners to use their imagination and visualise the chess board as their battle field, using the pieces as their army to protect their precious king whilst also attacking the other army to try and defeat the opponents king. It taught me that these fundamental lessons should not be rush and that consolidation is imperative to the future success and strategy of the child.

Learning happened

I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found it both practical and thought-provoking. I learned a great deal, particularly in areas that were new to me, such as the Emotional Tone Scale, the Three Barriers to Learning, the Components of Understanding, and the effective use of technology in coaching. The course provided useful frameworks that I can immediately apply in my coaching. If I could suggest one improvement, it would be the session on Control. While I understood the concepts being taught, I felt the presentation and terminology could be refined. Much of the discussion focused on directing, guiding and managing learners rather than "controlling" them. A term such as guidance, direction or session/student management might better reflect the intended meaning and avoid unintended negative connotations. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the course. It was well structured, highly relevant, and has already influenced how I think about coaching. I would gladly recommend it to other coaches.

Breakthrough moment

We discussed the en passant move. I thought I knew how to do it, but Mr Salimu and Mr Ricardo shed some light on it. There are ctually has 5 rules to complete an en passant, all regarding the piece you want to attack. The rules are as follows, the pawn must be at its starting square. It must move 2 squares to escape attack. Your attack must be immediate. The pawns must stand next to each other. It only occurs with pawns. If all these rules are not followed, en passant cannot occur.

Discipline your disappointment

Winning isn't everything. Teaching learners that failing is an opportunity for learning is of utter importance. While there are lessons in winning, losing serves an even greater purpose. It teaches learners that failure isn't bad. On the contrary, making mistakes shows you where you might lack and that can be utilised to improve. Learning from mistakes means learning a skill that might be engraved in their minds in perpetuity. The more you fail, the more you learn to control your response to it. Thinking of it as a chance to learn, might shift their minds to discipline their disappointment.

Learned that failing is an opportunity to learn.

Why Do You Coach?

For me, coaching began as a way of giving back to my community and helping young people develop through chess. Over time, I saw how coaching could positively influence confidence, discipline, decision-making, and life skills. The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes to my lifestyle and circumstances. During that difficult period, coaching became more than community service—it provided me with purpose, stability, and valuable financial support. This experience strengthened my belief that coaching can improve lives, not only through personal development but also by creating opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency. As a coach and a concerned citizen, I believe coaching plays an important role in developing individuals who can make responsible decisions, contribute positively to society, and improve their quality of life.

This coaching syllabus marks the beginning of a structured and unified approach to chess coaching across South Africa. It provides a common framework that coaches can follow, helping to ensure consistency in the development of both coaches and players. Through clear learning pathways, quality control measures, and recognized certification levels, the syllabus will improve coaching standards, strengthen player development, and reduce misunderstandings regarding coaching expectations and training outcomes. It's Important to Have a Solid Structured Plan to Achieve Maximum Efficiency When You Teach

Technology makes a big difference when used correctly in teaching. You need to find the most effective ways to convey your knowledge to your students. Structured Approach

It stood out because it teaches one how to organize themselves as a coach and emphasizes the importance of having a structure—a curriculum approach for the players you coach, based on their skill level. This is not a one-size-fits-all solution; you are dealing with different players of varying strengths. It is important to adapt to each learner based on their playing ability and help them improve gradually.

I have learned the proper way of thinking and executing based on this, I will apply it to my own coaching and improve where I lacked. I aim to be well organised and well structured when it comes to my coaching. I seek improvement each day as a coach to improve myself better, so I can deliver my services well.

Guiding Principles of a Coach

I learned a lot about how you should carry yourself as a coach. Instead of focusing on being right all the time, it is much better to focus on being effective and creating space for students to think. Understand your role as a coach. Be diverse and make use of all tools, including digital tools, as the world we live in today is increasingly digital. Interact with your players and engage in discussions. There are some really fascinating principles and guidelines on how to deliver your services to the highest standard.

This stood out to me because it offered a variety of ways to improve as a chess coach. It covered how to train certain skills and understandings to best deliver your service, as well as how to gain a better understanding of the learners you are teaching chess. Last but not least, it explained how to guide and structure their chess development consistently and in the correct order. What we learned was truly fascinating and life-changing.

Breakthrough to a Real Reflection on Coaching

Today’s lesson took a slight turn in how I perceive coaching and its alignment with life, as well as my goals and approach to chess. I learned about barriers that I was previously unaware of, which I admit have been quite disadvantageous in everything we do within our grassroots development structures that we have invested in within our community. From what I learned today, I definitely feel like I am emerging as a different person. I am inspired to do what is right, to correct how we have been operating, and to start applying what I have learned. I aim to develop players not only with my previous methods but also to allow them the freedom to grow and develop in their own ways, as we have players with diverse needs—some are hyperactive, some are learning gradually, and some are very advanced. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I genuinely believe that from here, we will develop well.

Professional Conduct

Reflection on the entire day: a growth impact was successfully delivered, where I fully understood all aspects of coaching in terms of emotion and how to interact with players. Leadership must be owned. The information on emotional triangles shared was really helpful in understanding how one should vary different emotional states around players in the coaching concept. I learned more about the emotional tone scale and how to respond to it, which will be very beneficial. It's also important to know how to maintain a contagious tone as a coach. Throughout the lesson, the standout moment was structuring and planning lessons well for a well-developed program for players, while also getting to know more about the certification systems and learner pathways. It’s amazing to be a part of this workshop and to gain all this information.

Chess isn’t just a game, but an instrument that teaches you to be strategic. It has 64 squares and each piece must be strategically played. Chessboard has vertical and horizontal squares ,which are called files and ranks. Each square has an address e.g a pawn on e2. As a coach we must be able to view and learn a thing about your student in the twelve modal ways of being strategic.

Seeing the Game Differently

We did a practical session, where we used the My Chess journey app to play a Pawn Game, where the board contained only pawns and the objective was to promote a pawn before the opponent. With no other pieces on the board, the exercise allowed me to focus on pawn structure, calculation and planning more clearly. I initially completed Level 1 (Cub), but because I already play chess at an intermediate to advanced level, I decided to challenge myself by going straight to Level 5 (Chief). I did three trials at this level and won.The activity showed me how simplifying the board can help a player see positions more clearly, calculate more effectively and make better decisions.

Improved my ability to calculate, plan and identify winning pawn positions, while learning how to simplify concepts and use practical exercises to help students see the board more clearly and remember key chess principles.

So far, I have learned about the meaning of power.

Ability refers to doing something or doing what you are doing while doing it. We can also explain power as consisting of speed. We also learned about challenges; most people think they know or assume they know something, which causes a lot of problems. We learned about barriers to learning; there are three of them. The first is a lack of understanding, which means making assumptions without knowing what you are talking about. The second is a steep gradient, referring to skipping crucial steps or leaving out many important parts, and teaching difficult concepts without the necessary basics. The last one is a misunderstood word, which makes it hard to grasp or understand if there is one term you do not comprehend. To be a better coach, you must be a better person. When you teach chess, don't skip the basics. Don't rush; instead, be consistent.

How to teach chess properly. Teach them differently because players are not the same. Assess them and teach them according to the stage there are in.

To Be A Coach You Must Be A Better Person

We learnt the barriers to learning which is importance to recognise when you are trying to become an effective coach. One was to know what you do not know. The attitude you have towards learning. We explored the barriers to study like a to steep a gradient of learning. Teaching beginners opening strategies before they even understand how the pieces of chess move. Lack of Mass explaining without demonstrating. Misunderstand words understanding that English is derivative language. We recognised the difference between talking and communicating. We learnt about 3 triangles the BE, DO, HAVE. the Reality, Affinity, Communication. The knowledge, responsibility, and control.

Chess Curriculum and technological tools to enhance lessons

We were given the chess curriculum which will assist guide us on the content that learners should be taught. This has been part of my coaching career I was always worried about as to being able to align with other coaches and be able to track students progress effectively even if the student is a transfer from another coach. The technological enhancements become even more special, as we are in the new age of technology, which the students can resonate with. The best platform for me in the whole session is the chessrun platform which assist with setting online lessons

The curriculum for chess allow all coaches to be aligned with the content we coach students thus making it student development aligned and heightened

Barriers to learning

In order to be a better coach you need to be a better person. It is also important to be able to identify the different types of people you will be teaching mostly using the Tone Scale.

Learning to Value My Time

We are raising human beings, not just chess players. We need to teach the kids holistically, not just how to move chess pieces. Building relationships is truly amazing. I have learned to run coaching as a business. I realized that the love for teaching dwindles when there is no monetary reward. It is also important to improve myself as a person. This will enable me to coach better with various resources and whatever knowledge I have acquired. Being organized and keeping records is a very useful and important skill that will enhance and demonstrate dedication to what you are doing. When you maintain clear and updated records, you can actually observe progress over time.

Using Different Tools for Coaching

I've learned that there are many tools at our disposal. We must learn to use them effectively. We need to manage the emotional aspects associated with coaching and know how to address and deal with emotional players and parents to manage them better. It's essential to create open channels of communication through various methods.

Set clear boundaries and rules for your own terms of reference as a coach
